Background on the Forest Plan

The Forest Plan was revised in 1997 and work continued on that revision process in response to appeals and litigation. This work was completed in early 2008 with the issuance of the Web-based 2008 Forest Plan Amendment. This Web site contains much background and other pertinent information related to the completion of the Forest Plan revision process. The 2008 Forest Plan Record of Decision includes pertinent information and rationale intended to give users a forward look at how the Forest Plan will be implemented into the future.

Tongass National Forest Vision Statement

In recognition of the significant values associated with the Tongass National Forest for Southeast Alaska and the Nation, along with the need for forward thinking implementation of the Forest Plan, a Joint Vision Statement for the Tongass was prepared and signed by the Governor of the State of Alaska and the Chief of the Forest Service. Consistent with the Joint Vision Statement, the Tongass National Forest is guided by the Tongass Vision Statement.
